How to Slide Into Someone’s DMs (Without Being Weird)

Reply to something they posted, keep it short and specific, skip compliments about looks, and know when to take the hint. How to DM someone you like.

Messaging someone you like on social media can go two ways: a fun conversation that turns into a plan, or a message that sits there unread forever. The difference is usually the first message.

Reply to something they posted

A comment on a specific story or post gives you both something to talk about. “Wait, is that the market on Bridge Street? Their bread line is a lifestyle.” is easy to answer. “Hey” is not. Pick something they shared because they care about it: a trip, a dog, a gig, a terrible cake attempt.

Keep it short

One or two lines. A long message from someone they barely know feels like pressure. Short, light and specific invites a reply without demanding one.

Skip the compliments about looks

“You’re gorgeous” from a near stranger is the message most people get the most of, and reply to the least. If you want to compliment them, compliment a choice they made: the photo, the joke, the book, the outfit.

Ask an easy question

End with something they can answer in a few seconds: “Was the view worth the climb?” or “Is the dog always that dramatic?” Easy questions get replies.

Match their energy

If they reply quickly, with questions back and a few lines, keep going. If they reply once with a word, leave it there. Two unanswered messages is the limit. A third looks like you’re not listening.

Move it towards real life

DMs are for starting, not for living there. After a good back and forth, suggest something that fits what you’ve been talking about: “You’ve sold me on the bread. Coffee and a loaf there on Saturday?”

Know who not to message

Someone you don’t know at all, whose profile is private, or who has never interacted with you: a cold message is a long shot and can feel intrusive. Mutual friends, shared events and people who already reply to your stories are much better bets.

Lines to borrow

  • Replying to a story: “Is that the lake up by the old mill? I’ve been meaning to go for ages.”
  • Complimenting a choice: “That playlist you shared is brilliant. I’ve had the third song on repeat all morning.”
  • An easy question: “Did you actually make it to the top? The view looks unreal.”
  • To someone you met once: “We met at Sam’s barbecue. I’m the one who burned the halloumi. How was the festival?”
  • When it’s going well: “Okay, I need to see this lake for myself. Walk up there together on Sunday?”

Practice it

The Story Reply is free to play: someone you met once posts a collapsed cake on her story, and your reply decides whether it turns into a plan. The Hey, Off the App and The Match practice keeping a message thread fun and moving it off the screen.
