What to Text After a First Date

If it went well, say so the next morning, carry on a joke from the date, keep a natural pace and suggest date two while the energy is high.

A good first date creates momentum. What you text afterwards decides whether it carries into a second date or fades. The good news: the best approach is also the simplest. Be warm, be specific, and make the next plan.

Text the next day, not in three days

Waiting three days so you don’t seem keen is an old rule that mostly makes people think you lost interest. If you had a good time, a message the next morning (or a “home safe?” the same night) is normal and welcome.

If they text first

Even better. Reply warmly and fairly soon, and match their energy. There’s no prize for making someone wait after a date you both enjoyed.

Say you had a good time

It sounds obvious, but many people hide it. “Had a great time last night” is clear and confident. Add something specific to make it personal.

Continue a joke from the date

The best follow-up texts pick up something you laughed about together: the terrible movie, the wrong order, the dog that stole the show. It reminds them of the best moment and makes replying easy.

Don’t ask for a review

“Did you have fun? I hope I wasn’t too much” puts the other person in charge of reassuring you. State how you felt, and let them share how they felt.

Match their pace

If replies slow down because of work or family, give them space. Don’t send three messages while they’re at lunch. Come back later with something light.

Suggest date two while the energy is high

When the chat is flowing, make a specific plan: “Thursday, I pick the movie, you pick the snacks?” A day, a place and a reason are easy to say yes to.

If they’re busy

If they say they’re slammed this week, suggest one specific day next week. A yes or a counter-offer means they’re keen; a vague “maybe” twice is usually a polite no.

If you hear nothing

People get busy, so one light message a few days later is fine. If that goes unanswered too, take the silence as your answer and let it go kindly. What to Text Someone Who Stopped Replying has the wording.

If you didn’t feel it

Silence leaves the other person guessing. A short, kind message is better: thank them, say you didn’t feel a spark and wish them well. It takes a minute and it’s what you’d want to hear. How to Reject Someone Over Text shows how.

Lines to borrow

  • The same night: “Just got in. Tonight was really fun, thank you.”
  • The next morning: “Morning! Still laughing about the waiter and the birthday song.”
  • Carrying on a joke: “I’ve told three people your theory about pineapple on pizza. They all agree with me, by the way.”
  • Suggesting date two: “That ramen place we walked past looked amazing. Want to try it next week?”
  • If they’re busy: “No problem at all. How about Tuesday next week instead?”

Practice it

The Day After is a chat scenario that starts the morning after a great first date. The Reschedule practices what to say when a date gets canceled.
