What to Do If You Text the Wrong Person

Sent a message to the wrong person? Don't delete it and don't panic. Own it quickly, keep it light, apologize once if it needs it, then let it go.

Everyone has sent a message to the wrong chat. Usually it’s harmless. Sometimes it goes to the person the message was about. Either way, how you handle the next minute matters more than the mistake.

Don’t delete and hope

They’ve probably seen it, and the notification often stays even after you delete. Deleting makes it look like you have something to hide.

Own it quickly

“That was meant for my friend, sorry!” is all most mistakes need. The faster you say it, the smaller it stays.

Keep it light if you can

If the message was harmless, or even flattering, a little humor helps: “Well, now you know I needed advice on what to say to you.”

Apologize once if it needs it

If the message was unkind, don’t joke it away. Say sorry, plainly, once. Then leave them room to reply.

Don’t over-explain

Three paragraphs of apology turn a small moment into a big one. Say it, then move on.

If it was about them

This is the one that makes your stomach drop. If what you said was kind, you’ve accidentally been honest, and that can go better than you’d think: see How to Tell Someone You Like Them. If it was unkind, apologize for what you said, not just for where it landed, and don’t argue the point.

In a group chat

One quick correction is enough. Follow-up after follow-up keeps it at the top of everyone’s screen. Then carry on as normal, and the chat moves on within minutes.

If you sent something private

A screenshot, an address or someone else’s news needs a quick, plain message asking them to delete it. At work, if it was confidential, tell the person it was meant for, or your manager, straight away. Owning it early is far better than hoping nobody noticed.

If they don’t reply

Silence usually means they’re busy, or being kind by letting it go. Don’t send more messages to fill the gap. If you see them in person, a smile and a quick word about it clears the air. How to Apologize to a Friend helps when it needs more than that.

Check the name first

Look at the name at the top of the chat before you send anything you wouldn’t want the other person to read.

Lines to borrow

  • A harmless mix-up: “Ignore that, it was meant for my mom. Although you’re welcome to Sunday lunch too.”
  • When it was about them, and kind: “Well, this is embarrassing. That was meant for my friend, but every word was true.”
  • When it was unkind: “I’m sorry. I was venting and it wasn’t fair. You didn’t deserve to read that.”
  • In the work chat: “Wrong chat, sorry everyone! Please forget my opinions on the office plant.”
  • When they’re gracious about it: “Thank you for being so nice about this. I’m going to go and hide now.”

Practice it

Wrong Chat starts with exactly this: you asked your friend how to ask Fern out, and sent it to Fern. The Bus Shelter is a branching scenario where a bad first move has to be won back.
